Edinburgh’s tourist tax is now in effect

From today, 24 July 2026, Edinburgh became the first Scottish city to charge an overnight visitor levy. The tax is 5% of the accommodation cost before VAT and other fees. It applies to hotels, hostels, B&Bs and short-term rental properties booked after this date.

What does that mean in cash? A room priced at 100 GBP per night will add around 5 GBP to your bill. A 300 GBP suite adds about 15 GBP. The cap is 7 consecutive nights per stay. The money goes to the city council for public services and event funding. According to Euronews, the scheme aims to raise up to 50 million GBP (about 58 million EUR) per year.

How to pay it and what to watch for

Most platforms (Booking.com, Airbnb, hotel direct sites) will add the levy automatically at checkout. If you book by phone or walk in, ask clearly if the tax is included in the final price. Some properties may show it as a separate line. Do not assume your rate is all-inclusive.

The tax is cheaper than similar schemes in Europe. Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the room rate plus a fixed per-person fee. Paris applies a flat per-night tax that varies by hotel category. Edinburgh’s percentage system means you pay more for pricier rooms but less for budget stays.
