But here is the truth: you do not need to suffer. The Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Iceland) stay mild at 18, 25°C, with 18, 20 hours of daylight. Poland and the Czech Republic see one third fewer tourists than Italy. A good meal in Kraków costs 12 EUR. In Venice you pay 30 EUR for the same plate.

Practical Warnings
Trains in France and Italy sell out two weeks in advance in summer 2026. Book TGV or Frecciarossa tickets by June 1. The Eiffel Tower elevator queue is 2.5 hours at 11 a.m. Go at 8:30 a.m. or skip the climb. Barcelona's La Sagrada Familia entry is 21 EUR but you need a timed slot booked online. Cash is still king in rural Greece and Portugal. Pickpockets operate on Line 1 of the Paris Metro and on Rome's 64 bus. Keep your wallet in a front zip pocket.
Late August is the sweet spot. Schools in northern Europe start again, crowds thin by 30%, and hotel rates drop 15, 25%. The sea is warmest then. Do that.
