Gulf travel advisories are back

The US and several European governments have reinstated travel advisories for parts of the Gulf region, according to Skift. Hotels there were already struggling before this month's headlines. Airlines are passing fuel costs to you

American Airlines reported it offset half its fuel expenses through higher fares, and then cut its profit outlook anyway. Other carriers are following. That means transatlantic tickets for late summer and fall 2026 will stay high. A round-trip from New York to Madrid or Barcelona now costs from around 700 to 1,100 EUR if you book 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Earlier booking or routing through a non Gulf hub saves money.

What to do instead

Skip the Gulf stopover. Fly direct on carriers like Iberia, Air France or KLM. For southern Europe, consider Madrid or Rome as a base rather than using Middle Eastern connections. If you already booked a Gulf transit, call the airline to see if you can switch to a direct flight without penalty due to the advisory note.

Rail and ground travel still run smoothly

No rail strikes are currently affecting major European networks. Trains from Madrid to Barcelona run every 30 minutes and take about 2 hours 45 minutes. The Amsterdam to Paris Thalys route is also operating on schedule. Check official operator sites the day before travel.
